OpenAthens: Transition FAQs

I am joining UKHSA from Test and Trace. I haven’t had an OpenAthens account before. What do I need to do?

Please register at NICE OpenAthens using your NHS Test and Trace email address and entering UKHSA as your organisation you will be automatically approved. You should then receive an email confirmation with a link to create your own password.

 

I am joining UKHSA from Test and Trace. I had a DHSC OpenAthens account. What do I need to do?

You will need to log in to your current account from NICE OpenAthens. Use the yellow ‘log in’ link on the top right and on your homepage there is an option to ‘change organisation’. Select UKHSA as your organisation. If you do not do this, you won’t be able to access the substantial public health evidence resources which UKHSA KLS make available to you

 

I am a current PHE employee with a PHE OpenAthens account and I am moving to DHSC/OHID/NHSEI/NHSD. Can I retain my PHE OpenAthens account after 30 September?

Yes. You can keep your personal PHE OpenAthens account (which in due course will be renamed as UKHSA OpenAthens accounts) as part of transitional arrangements to ensure continuity of access to resources for the period 1 October 2021 – 31 March 2022. It is critical that you ensure that you continue to keep your PHE email address associated with your UKHSA OpenAthens account. If you change the email address associated with your PHE/UKHSA OpenAthens account to your DHSC/NHSEI/NHSD email address the OpenAthens account will be suspended and you will not be able to access public health evidence resources made available by UKHSA KLS


I am a current PHE employee moving to OHID/NHSEI/NHSD. Can I have both a PHE/UKHSA OpenAthens account and an OpenAthens account of the organisation I am moving to?

In theory yes, you can continue to have your PHE/UKHSA OpenAthens account associated with your PHE email address, and use the email address given to you by your new employer to obtain an OpenAthens account with your receiver organisation. However, this also depends on whether the organisation you are moving to makes evidence resources available and whether they have their own OpenAthens ID. You will need to check with your new employer

 

I am a currently a DHSC employee moving into OHID. Am I eligible for a UKHSA OpenAthens account?

No. Current DHSC employees moving into OHID will continue to have library services and resources provided by the DHSC Knowledge Centre. Please contact DHSC Knowledge Centre for further information knowledgecentre@dhrt.koha-ptfs.eu or email Andrew Oakes andrew.oakes@dhsc.gov.uk

 

I am a PHE employee moving into UKHSA. Do I need to do anything to retain access to my OpenAthens account?

No. There will be no changes required and your account will continue to work from 1 October using your PHE email address and PHE laptop. When your identity/email address changes to UKHSA you should change the email address on your OpenAthens account to your UKHSA email address

 

I am employed within a local authority public health team, will there be an impact on my OpenAthens account? 

No, OpenAthens accounts for local authority public health staff under the administration of Public Health Staff in England will be unaffected.
