One of the easiest ways to get reliable health information is to use trusted sources. There is lots of information available, particularly online, but it can be hard to verify information that has been shared on a social media site.

UKHSA KLS has a number of print books and eBooks that can help improve your critical thinking and understanding of scientific and healthcare topics. View our list here. UKHSA staff can collect print books from our libraries, or we can post them to you, and eBooks are instantly accessible for all UKHSA staff.

Fact Checking organisations and websites can help you get your facts right, and recognise false information. Here are some trusted Fact Checking websites:

Events

UKHSA Knowledge and Library Services are marking Health Information Week by highlighting resources and holding a series of short, informal events aimed at UKHSA staff.

Predatory publishers and journals: what you need to know’ will:

  • explain what predatory publishers are and describe their common characteristics
  • highlight what to consider and look out for when choosing where to publish
  • explain core and best practices in scholarly publishing for publishers and journals

Oh I don’t know what to believe’ introduces evaluating information sources.  It will include a look at a range of sources, consider why unhelpful information exists and what can be done about it. The session will include a demonstration of tools which will aim to increase confidence to evaluate information sources.

Play the ‘Bad News’ Serious Game’ will:

  • Enable you to explore what makes fake news so compelling by joining us to play the role of a fake news-monger. See how many followers you can hook whilst staying credible, and simultaneously gain insight into how and why fake news attracts believers.
  • Give you a chance to play online ‘serious game’ Bad News to explore this genre
  • take part in an informal discussion about how to spot suspect information and challenge fake news you encounter in your social life
